Heritage

Five generations of Dubuquers raised their families by making high quality windows, doors and trim in the largest mill working operation in the world.

Known by various names through the years, including Carr, Ryder, Adams & Co., Farley & Loetscher Manufacturing, Caradco, Eagle Manufacturing, and Jeld-Wen, the tradition continues to this day.

The Mississippi River next door provided early transportation options for moving wood up and down the river.  It is the reason for Dubuque’s existence.  The work ethic that made this industry thrive lives on in our community today, bringing success to the many businesses located here.

Many of Dubuque’s stately Victorian mansions evolved from the late 1800’s due to wealth created by this industry.  Our rich fabric of architectural gems from that era continue to add to the appeal of our community today.

The Factory buildings themselves were built to withstand the test of time.  In recent years, their redevelopment into commercial and residential loft spaces sets the pace for the next five generations.  The new standard brings sustainability through energy efficiency, state of the art communications, thoughtful design and diversity of uses.
